Arsenal legend Ian Wright makes admission over Unai Emery's future amid Mesut Ozil saga

Arsenal icon Ian Wright has opened up on why he wants Mesut Ozil to be at the Gunners longer than Unai Emery.

The former German international was notably absent from his side's matchday squad for their clash against Vitoria in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Ozil’s last competitive appearance for the north London club came on September 24 in their 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup - while he has been restricted to just one Premier League outing in 2019-20, that coming against Watford back in August.

Both Ozil and Emery have contracts at Arsenal until the summer of 2021, but with the Spaniard coming under increasing pressure due to an indifferent start to the season, the jury is out on who could potentially leave the Emirates first.

And Wright has made his feelings known on who he wants to be at the club longer.

“Well hopefully Ozil,” Wright said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show.

“He’s already said he doesn’t want to leave. For me, hopefully it’s Ozil.”

Before the Gunners legend added: “I’m very disappointed to see that [Ozil not in the squad] because I don’t think that Arsenal, when you look at Arsenal’s creative stats, they’re not up there.

“They’re actually not creating as much and they’re conceding more shots on target.

“So that says to me you need somebody who’s creative to be playing there.

“Mesut Ozil is that guy, I don’t know what’s going on with him and Unai Emery, but for me I think this could be the problem for Unai in the end if Arsenal continue to do what they’re doing.

“They’re waiting for [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang or Pepe, like the other day, to save them. The fact is he should be playing.”
