Arsenal legend Ian Wright explains why he disliked Manchester United

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has discussed the fierce rivalry with Manchester United during the 1990s and early 2000s.

The intense clashes between the giants of the north and south of England are now renowned for their hard-hitting tackles, flashpoints and stunning goals.

Both United and the Gunners were battling it out to reach the pinnacle of English football with iconic scenes including the tunnel bust-up between then-captains Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira.

But the legendary forward has detailed what led to his disliking of Sir Alex Ferguson's side and fellow pundit, Keane.

With the relationship between the stars of both clubs from yesteryear amicable, Wright alongside the 50-year-old discussed the encounters.

"That's the thing, you try to explain to people now, obviously me and Roy [Keane] have a laugh," he said on ITV's coverage of the FA Cup.

"But I can't tell you how much I disliked Roy, Manchester United, they were so successful, so good, it was so hard to beat them. You can't beat those games, I was watching one of those games the other day and Gary Neville - amazing game."

The height of Wright's career came at his boyhood club where he won two FA Cups and the Premier League.

During the 1990s, Sir Alex led the Reds to three FA Cup triumphs as well as a number of Premier League titles.

For Arsenal, they regained their success in the prestigious competition in the latter stages of Arsene Wenger's tenure and beginning of Mikel Arteta's reign, etching their name on the trophy four times between 2014 and 2020.

United's wait for success in the tournament stretched to five years following the quarter-final defeat to Leicester City last year. They booked their place in the fourth round where they will host Middlesbrough, after beating Aston Villa on Monday.
