Arsenal legend gives his verdict on Aaron Ramsdale as £24m transfer nears

Arsenal icon David Seaman has compared the situation he found himself in his playing days to that of new Gunners goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale has been announced as an Arsenal player after football.london revealed on Wednesday that a fee of around £24million had been agreed between the two clubs.

The Gunners have received criticism in some quarters for their pursuit of the 23-year-old but Seaman has leapt to the former England Under-21 international's defence, claiming that the ex-Bournemouth player bears some similarities to a youngster version of himself.

"There’s a lot of similarities to when I joined Arsenal. I was England’s No.3 at the World Cup in 1990, Ramsdale has done the same," Seaman told talkSPORT.

"I started getting a load of stick because the fans didn’t want me. They were all singing 'Lukic is better than Seaman' and 'You’ll never play for Arsenal.' There are some similarities and hopefully, he will go on to have a very good career at Arsenal.

"He’s still learning, you can see that. Will he walk into the team? I don’t think so. I think what he’s got to do is get in training, impress the manager and get the respect of the lads as well."

Still, Seaman took aim at his former club's recent transfer policy, claiming that the selling of Hale End graduates Emiliano Martinez and Joe Willock were both poor decisions by technical director Edu.

He continued: "It’s so frustrating, especially the (Emiliano) Martinez one.

"When you have paid that much money for a goalkeeper and you’ve let a really good one go.

"Joe Willock went to Newcastle and had a great loan spell and had the chance of keeping him, but why did they let him go?

"I just don’t know and you look at what is out there you think, 'he is better than them'."
