Arsenal legend feared 'Newcastle vibes' in emphatic Leeds United win

It's a comeback that will forever be etched into Premier League folklore - and the memory of Newcastle United's fans - even if it did leave one former Arsenal hero with a dreaded feeling of déjà vu.

Just over ten years to the day since the Magpies produced THAT stunning fightback against Arsenal, the Gunners found themselves in what could have been a similar position against Leeds United.

However, after watching Newcastle rally from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 on that famous February afternoon, back in 2011, Arsenal did manage to hold off a second-half charge this time around.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set the tone and returned to his best form with a hat-trick at the Emirates Stadium against Leeds yesterday, while Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin was on also on target.

With only 43 minutes left to play and Arsenal, once again, 4-0 to the good, those 'Newcastle vibes' came flooding back for Ian Wright, who analysed the 4-2 victory against Leeds as part of the Match of the Day 2 panel alongside host Mark Chapman and former Everton midfielder Leon Osman.

Wright said: "If they get this (a penalty shout), it's 4-3 and I'm getting real Newcastle vibes in my head.

"Once it goes through, he gets impeded, it would be a foul outside the box.

"I thought they'd give it and I think Leeds can feel hard done to because he gets sandwiched out."

Leeds were left frustrated when their penalty appeal was turned down by referee Stuart Atwell, after Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa had given the Whites a lifeline, and Arsenal eased to three points.

He added: "They've (Leeds) got this man-to-man marking system, but Arsenal were brilliant.

"The movement of their forwards, the way they moved them around and the intensity of closing down, it's where Leeds came unstuck.

"There was great movement; Saka, Odegaard. It gave them space to take on defenders. I wondered if they would change it (man-to-man), but they didn't.

"When they scored 4-1, then 4-2, I panicked. They had a penalty shout which was a good one on Bamford.

"They all went to play; Saka, Odegaard, Smith Rowe and when Aubameyang gets out into space, for him to run at the right-back, it's big trouble."
