Arsenal legend explains why Callum Hudson-Odoi holds all the cards in Chelsea contract talks

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon believes that Callum Hudson-Odoi holds all the cards in his Chelsea contract talks as a result of the way the season has progressed.

The 18-year-old's campaign was ended prematurely in the 2-2 draw with Burnley when he suffered an achilles injury with the wonderkid undergoing surgery on Wednesday, meaning he will miss the final few games of the season and the Europa League semi final.

His future is somewhat unclear at the moment - Chelsea are trying to tie him down to a new contract but Bayern Munich are extremely interested in signing him having missed out on his signature in the January transfer window.

Fans are hopeful that the 18-year-old will stay at Chelsea and sign a new contract in the summer as a reward for his performances during his breakthrough season at the Bridge.

Before his injury he had started the previous four games for Maurizio Sarri in the Premier League and looked to have cemented his spot in the first team, but he will have to wait until next season to continue that.

And ahead of contract talks Dixon reckons that Hudson-Odoi is in the perfect position

“He’s in an absolutely perfect position as far as a young man trying to learn his trade, trying to make his way [goes],” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“He’s at a brilliant football club, he’s started to play, big clubs are after him, his contract’s running towards the end - he could not be in a better position.

“And hopefully this injury isn’t long-term and he’s now in a position where he can get fit pretty quick.”
