Arsenal legend explains what Raul Sanllehi and Vinai Venkatesham really think of Unai Emery

Unai Emery is going to be the Arsenal manager for the forseeable future.

The Spaniard has endured a difficult start to the 2019/20 season, with the Gunners in sixth place in the Premier League, eight points adrift of the top four.

That follows a season in which Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League - one of Emery's primary objectives when he replaced Arsene Wenger as head coach last summer.

The pressure has intensified on the head coach's shoulders in recent weeks, so much so that Raul Sanllehi and Vinai Venkatesham were forced to come out and show their support for the man they entrusted with replacing Wenger.

In a staff meeting they said: "We firmly believe Unai is the right man for the job.

"We are as disappointed as everyone else with both our results and performances at this stage of the season.

"We share the frustration with our fans, Unai, players and all our staff as they are not at the level we want or expect. Things need to improve to meet our objectives for the season.

"We are all working intensively behind the scenes to turn things around and are confident we will."

Art de Roche on what Unai Emery needs to improve

But one Arsenal legend believes that statement was merely "politics".

Emmanuel Petit won the Premier League and FA Cup double with the Gunners in 1997/98 and thinks the club are already thinking about sacking Emery.

He told Paddy Power: "What the club came out and said about Emery’s job being safe is not true at all.

"Everyone knows this the typical official language clubs send out to the press and fans when things are not going well, when they sense tension.

"This is a political answer and most of the time when I hear officials or shareholders talk like this it’s proof for me that they’re already thinking about sacking the manager.

"It’s the opposite of what they’re saying that might be true."
