Arsenal legend David Seaman's glowing verdict on new goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

David Seaman has heaped praise upon Aaron Ramsdale, tipping the Arsenal goalkeeper for great things at the Emirates.

Ramsdale has been brilliant for the Gunners since his £25 million transfer in the summer, keeping four clean sheets in seven appearances in all competitions and Arsenal have not lost a game with the Englishman in-between the sticks.

And these performances have not gone unnoticed, with Arsenal and England legend Seaman one of many to highlight just how quickly the 23-year-old has adapted to life in North London.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Seaman said: “I have seen him [Ramsdale] in training and in games as well, and I’m really impressed. He’s improved a lot. He’s got a great character and looks to be settling well.”

There were many who questioned Mikel Arteta’s decision to sign Ramsdale, especially after he sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa the previous year.

But more-so, Ramsdale had just suffered back-to-back relegations from the Premier League, first with Bournemouth and then with Sheffield United, and while he claimed each club’s Player of the Season award in those ill-fated campaigns, he had looked unconvincing as a top-flight goalkeeper.

Arsenal supporters and pundits believed that it would be difficult for their new signing to dislodge Bernd Leno as the No.1 keeper at the club, but if this start is anything to go by, Ramsdale has established himself as the Gunners’ first choice in-between the sticks for many seasons to come.

Seaman echoed this sentiment, recalling his experiences when he moved to Arsenal from Queens Park Rangers in 1990.

“A lot of Arsenal fans weren’t too sure about him [Ramsdale] signing but he’s proved them wrong so far.

“It reminds me lot of what I was used to when I joined Arsenal. The fans all used to sing that ‘John Lukic is better than David Seaman’. I remember them saying ‘you’d never play for Arsenal’ and I proved them wrong!”

Seaman made a whopping 564 appearances for Arsenal in 13 years, winning lots of silverware including three league titles (two in the Premier League era) and four FA Cups.

He also earned 75 caps for the Three Lions and is widely considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in English football history.
