Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas delivers verdict on Serge Aurier's red card vs Southampton

There could have been a couple of villains for Tottenham on Saturday.

Serge Aurier was sent off in the first half for two quick bookings, while Hugo Lloris dropped a clanger to allow Danny Ings to equalise Tanguy Ndombele's opener.

As it was, Harry Kane notched another goal to secure a 2-1 win for Spurs, to spare the duo's blushes.

And in Lloris' defence, he made two stunning saves in the second half to make up for his error.

Aurier did not have the same opportunity to make up for his misdemeanour.

The Ivorian apologised on social media on Saturday night, but was he harshly treated?

The first yellow card was a definite booking, fouling Ryan Bertrand with a scissor tackle from behind.

But his second was picked up when he chased down Bertrand, having got on the wrong side of him, and barely touched him as the Saints full-back went to ground as he marauded forward.

Charlie Nicholas was watching the game for Soccer Saturday and he gave his verdict on the red card.

He said: "The first one was rash, he ends up trying to do the wrap, two feet round, the second one they complained that Hojbjerg was controlling it on the line and out of play.

"He doesn't cut across the guy but he's clumsy, it was slightly harsh, but these are the modern day yellows we have to go along with and accept they're so soft. To grind out a 2-1 with ten men, Spurs will be pretty pleased with that."

And Nicholas added that the three points were a welcome relief for Spurs.

"It's a big win for them," he said. "It gets them back into the top six. There are so many teams sitting on 11 points, one or two bad results and you're out of the frame, it was a massive win for them.

"One thing I would say about Spurs is they argued non-stop with the referee, kept at him and at him, Danny Rose had two minutes where he asked him questions and about his decision making and I don't quite know where they got that from because at times they were a bit fortunate to get away with certain situations."
