Arsenal issue strongly-worded response after Valencia fans filmed making 'Nazi salutes'

Arsenal have utterly condemned the visiting supporters in the Valencia end in Thursday's Europa League semi-final, first leg who were filmed making alleged Nazi salutes and monkey gestures at opposing fans.

A video appeared on social media showing a group of men in Valencia's section of the Emirates Stadium gesturing at the Arsenal home crowd, with several individuals acting like monkeys whilst one performed what appeared to be a Nazi salute.

UEFA are expected to investigate the incident, which came during Arsenal's 3-1 win over Valencia.

"We are working with Valencia on this," an Arsenal spokesperson said.

"We utterly condemn such behaviour.

"We continue to encourage fans to report  incidents and to provide witness statements so effective action can be taken."

"These blatant racist gestures are shocking and inexcusable," said a statement from Kick It Out.

"We hope the relevant authorities identify the perpetrators and take the strongest possible punishment.

In a subsequent response to the incident Valencia highlighted three areas on which they wished to make a statement.

It said: "In relation to the images in the stands of Arsenal Stadium appearing on social networks, Valencia CF:

"1. Publicly condemns bluntly and expresses its strongest repulsion and zero tolerance, as it has always done, towards the isolated gestures of people located in the visitors' tier and who, evidently, do not represent Valencia fans in any way.

"2. In contact with its legal services, is working on the identification of the responsible persons to proceed, in case of being members of the club, to take the corresponding disciplinary measures, for which [Valencia] requests the collaboration of the rest of the fans located in said tier.

"3. Although these attitudes are absolutely unjustifiable in any case, the VCF is trying to obtain information, in the same way, about possible provocations prior to said verbal and gestural confrontation between people from the local and visitor stands."

The video is the latest in a number of high-profile instances of racial abuse at stadiums and elsewhere in recent months.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was the subject of racist language at the Emirates Stadium in the Europa League quarter-final whilst England internationals Raheem Sterling, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Danny Rose were targeted in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro in March.
