Arsenal issue Bernd Leno injury update as goalkeeper begins outside running

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has started running outside as he steps up his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

The German sustained moderate ligament damage to his right knee after colliding with striker Neal Maupay during defeat at Brighton on June 20.

Arsenal ruled Leno out for "four to six weeks" following assessments and, a month on, the keeper is edging closer to full fitness.

A club statement read: "Now participating in outside running, with the aim of starting ball drills in the next few days."

Leno is not expected to play again for Arsenal this season, with just two more games of the league campaign remaining, along with the weekend FA Cup semi-final.

The FA Cup final, which Arsenal will reach should they beat Manchester City on Saturday, is on August 1.

Deputy Emi Martinez has impressed in Leno's absence, recently making seven saves during the north London derby loss to Tottenham and helping earn Arsenal a win over Premier League champions Liverpool.
