Arsenal Invincible Lauren delivers verdict on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contract decision

Former Arsenal defender Lauren believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s decision to stay with the Gunners had nothing to do with the money or trophies.

Aubameyang signed a new contract extension at the Emirates Stadium until 2023 earlier this month, putting to bed speculation over his future.

The Gabonese striker has been the Gunners’ top goalscorer in both seasons he’s been at the club and has since been named captain.

So far this season, Aubameyang has scored once in the Premier League - on an opening day win at Fulham - and netted in the Community Shield win over Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta: Nketiah is good enough to start

Lauren, who was at the Gunners from 2000 until 2007 when he moved to Portsmouth, was speaking to Goal about his decision to turn down a move to Real Madrid before moving to Highbury.

However, the former Arsenal right-back has no regrets about his decision and that’s where he can understand Aubameyang’s choice.

“No regrets at all. If I was born again, I would sign for Arsenal 10 more times because I played with top players, with a top manager, at a top institution with top human beings all around,” Lauren said.

“Arsenal is my family and it will always be my family because it’s the place I grew up as a person in so many ways.

“It’s not only about the trophies, it’s not about the money. It’s more than that. You see now with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: it’s not about money, you love the place, you love the people and the way they treat you. This is Arsenal.

“Arsenal give you everything necessary to make you feel like you are in a family and I really feel that Arsenal is my family.”
