Arsenal injury update as Danny Welbeck undergoes further ankle surgery

Arsenal are continuing to assess the severity of Danny Welbeck’s ankle injury after confirming the striker has undergone a second operation in four days.

The 27-year-old was carried off midway through the first half of last Thursday’s Europa League draw against Sporting Lisbon.

An x-ray confirmed a serious injury to his right leg and he had initial surgery on Friday.

The club have confirmed Welbeck required a second procedure and are as yet unwilling to suggest when he may return.

A club statement said: “Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle. Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It’s too early to say how long it will take.”

The injury casts doubts on the striker’s future at the club as his contract expires at the end of the season. He had been linked to a January move to Crystal Palace or Tottenham before his injury.

He now faces another long spell out after missing 70 games between May 2015 and January 2017 with a string of injuries.
