Arsenal identify goalkeeper transfer options to provide Bernd Leno with first-team competition

Aaron Ramsdale has been earmarked for a role at Arsenal to provide competition to Bernd Leno but should the move fail to happen Sam Johnstone has been lined up as his replacement.

Both Johnstone and Ramsdale were relegated last season and the two England internationals are looking for quick returns to Premier League football according to the Daily Star.

Leno is currently Arsenal's undisputed number one but Gunners boss Mikel Arteta wants to add serious competition for the goalkeeping spot and Ramsdale is his first-choice for that role.

However, recently appointed Sheffield United manager Slavisa Jokanovic has revealed that he does not expect any members of his first-team squad to leave Bramall Lane this summer.

"No. I do not expect players to leave," Jokanovic said, speaking to our sister title, YorkshireLive. "I don't have any benefits from this.

"Sander and Aaron are mentioned. These are among the best two players in my squad. If they stay I will be really happy."

Should Ramsalde remain at Brammal Lane, attention will turn to The Hawthorns and prising Johnstone away from the Baggies.

Johnstone is currently ahead of Ramsdale in the England pecking order with the 28-year-old named in the final Euro 2020 squad, compared to the Sheffield United stopper who was a late call-up to replace the injured Dean Henderson.

The West Brom 'keeper is the more experienced of the pair having racked up over 250 first-team matches compared to Ramsdale's 123, however, at 23 Ramsdale has youth on his side.

The two both have 'homegrown' status something which is a particularly appealing aspect for Arteta as he looks to overhaul his failing squad.
