Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger claims he rejected the chance to manage Manchester United

Former Arsenal Arsene Wenger has revealed he was offered the Manchester United job, but refused to say when.

The Gunners icon recently released his new book, 'My Life in Red and White' which has divulged several revelations about his career in football.

Wenger held an up-and-down relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson during his time in English football, with a number of high-profile spats along the way, given their fierce competition at the top of the Premier League table in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Manchester United were expecting Ferguson's retirement in 2002, only for the United boss to continue managing for another 11 seasons, eventually departing the dugout in 2013.

Wenger has now revealed that he was offered the hot seat at Old Trafford during his career but refused to say when, turning down the chance because he was still the manager of Arsenal.

“City never, United yes – I cannot tell you exactly when!” Wenger told FourFourTwo. “(I said) No, because I was at Arsenal.

“You know, I had a real love story with Arsenal. My life is red and white. I felt when I came to the club that there was this special charm inside it.

"It was a good mixture between respect for tradition, respect for people, and not being scared to sometimes face unpopular judgements."

Wenger eventually left Arsenal in 2018 after 14 years without winning a Premier League title and was replaced by Unai Emery, who in turn was sacked for Mikel Arteta inside 18 months of his reign.
