Arsenal hit with fine after admitting to FA charge following Man City drama

Arsenal have accepted their £20,000 fine for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion mid-way through the second-half of their New Year's Day home clash against Manchester City.

The Gunners were slapped with an FA charge for the conduct of their players in the aftermath of referee Stuart Atwell's decision to hand Gabriel Magalhaes a second yellow card just two minutes after he had awarded Man City a penalty.

An FA statement read: " Arsenal FC has been fined £20,000 after admitting a charge for a breach of FA rule E20.1 and accepting the standard penalty.

"The club failed to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 59th minute of its Premier League fixture against Manchester City FC."

Brazilian central defender Gabriel picked up both cautions within two minutes of each other, though there was originally confusion over what the first caution had been dished out for.

Some have claimed it was due to his attempt at deliberately scuffing the penalty spot before Riyad Mahrez stepped up for City from 12 yards.

However, it seems like the more likely reasoning was for his reaction to the penalty being awarded in the first place as Gabriel was one of many Gunners stars surrounding Atwell after he had pointed to the spot.

The second swiftly followed after Gabriel had clattered into fellow Brazilian Gabriel Jesus on the halfway line in a poor attempt to halt another City attack.

Gunners assistant boss Albert Stuivenberg took the place of manager Mikel Arteta for the game while the Spaniard was at home recovering from Covid-19.

Following the clash, Stuivenberg had some words of advice for Gabriel.

"Yeah of course when you have a yellow card you have to control your emotions and be smart," the Arsenal assistant told BT Sport.

"I am not sure why the first yellow card was given, I hear some different things, but if you have it you need to control your emotions."

Gabriel was meant to serve the one-match suspension during the first-leg of Arsenal's Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool, though that has since been postponed.

It is now expected that the Brazilian sits out the FA Cup third round clash away at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Arsenal actually put in a spirited display that warranted more than what they got against the reigning champions.

Arteta would have been delighted with what he watched from home as his Arsenal side were one of the few teams this season to take the game to City and give Pep Guardiola's men something to think about.
