Arsenal hero Ray Parlour sticks the boot into "diabolical" Tottenham after Europa League exit

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle labelled Spurs "diabolical" after they were eliminated from the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb - and Arsenal hero Ray Parlour agrees with his assessment.

Tottenham won the first leg of their last 16 clash 2-0 but were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate thanks to a hat-trick from Mislav Orsic, who netted the winner in extra-time.

Speaking on BT Sport after Spurs were eliminated, Hoddle said: "It was a disastrous performance, a disastrous result for the club.

"I certainly didn't see it coming, I've got to say, but to be fair to Zagreb, they showed more heart and more determination. In the end, Orsic's hat-trick, he showed better skill, better technique and ability. Spurs were diabolical tonight, they really were."

Speaking to talkSPORT, Parlour has questioned why Tottenham did not "go for the away goal", explaining that "Spurs are a lot better going forward than they are defending."

He said: "I did watch the Spurs game in the end and Glenn Hoddle at the end, a Spurs legend, saying [the performance was] 'diabolical'. It really was.

"You go away, I know you're trying to hold on and you're 2-0 up. They probably could have won 4-0 in the first leg, the game was over.

"But sometimes you go away from home, you take your foot off the peddle. Why didn't they go for the away goal? I really don't get it. Spurs are a lot better going forward than they are defending.

"The defence isn't good enough to defend like that. They invited pressure on and I think Jose Mourinho said in his post-match interview 'I told them at half-time you've got to be wary.' They get one goal and suddenly they get a lift.

"It's such a disappointing result if you're a Spurs fan. I'm sure Spurs fans are not happy because it was a real opportunity to go a long way in this tournament. They'll be really disappointed this morning."

Reflecting on their elimination, Mourinho told BT Sport: "To say I feel sad is not enough. What I feel goes much further than sadness.

"I just left the Dinamo dressing room where I went to praise their guys and feel sorry that one team that is not my team won the game based on attitude and compromised so I feel more than sad. That's it."
