Arsenal hero Ray Parlour explains why Unai Emery must start Mesut Ozil against Liverpool

Arsenal hero Ray Parlour believes that the Gunners are lacking creativity in midfield and should therefore turn to Mesut Ozil, who has been consistently overlooked by Unai Emery.

The German World Cup winner has played just twice this season and, despite being one of the five leaders in the squad identified by the Arsenal boss, has been regularly overlooked.

However, the former Real Madrid ace is in the squad for tomorrow's Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool at Anfield - and supporters have made it clear they want to see their idolised number 10 return to action.

As identified by Parlour, the supporters are confused by Ozil's continued absence and the lack of inspiration from Arsenal's midfield contingent could become a real issue.

“I think the fans are a little bit mystified on why he has been left out. I don’t know the real reasons because we don’t see him in training, we don’t see his attitude,” he told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“For me, when I was left out, I made sure I worked really hard in the next week to try and get back into the side. Whether he has gone there and he’s taken it easy but the fans were singing his name against Crystal Palace.

“He’s still got lots to offer, he’s a quality player and I think creativity in the midfield area is lacking a bit from Arsenal’s point of view.”

Ozil has travelled with the rest of the Arsenal squad to Merseyside, but Emery refused to confirm whether the German would start.

"If he's in the group he has a possibility to play," he said.

"We had this morning a very good conversation, Mesut and I. I said to him my idea with him hasn't changed. He knows what I want with him.

"It's the same last year, the first day of pre-season training here and one conversation between me and him. It's the same one month ago and in that way some circumstances didn't help us to be in every moment consistent or available to play.

"The last weeks he was progressively training well, adding his spirit to help us. That conversation this morning is because I wanted to listen to him, how he's thinking now to help us and be with us tomorrow.

"Then if we are in the same spirit and idea to play. It was a very good conversation."
