Arsenal hero makes Manchester United comparison over key transfer decision

David Seaman has hailed Bernd Leno as Arsenal's undisputed number one - and says he "admires" Emiliano Martinez's decision to leave the Gunners during the summer transfer window.

Martinez impressed during a spell deputising for the injured Leno towards the back end of last season.

So it was perhaps something of a surprise to see the Argentine stopper sign for Premier League rivals Aston Villa in a £20million deal.

However, Seaman understands the move, with Leno regaining his place as Mikel; Arteta's first choice between the sticks for Arsenal following his return to fitness.

The former England international compared the situation to that of Dean Henderson at Manchester United.

Henderson has found himself back-up to David De Gea at Old Trafford following an impressive loan stint at Sheffield United - and has been linked with another move away in order to gain regular first-team football.

Speaking to The Target Men Podcast by Football Index, Seaman said: "Leno has had a great time at Arsenal, there’s no doubt.

"He’s shown what he can do and, for me, he’s definitely the number one.

"I was a bit surprised when Martínez left because I wanted two good goalkeepers at the club.

"With Martínez, he was experienced and had experience winning trophies, so I felt that was brilliant.

"But then you’ve got a problem of having two goalkeepers that want to be number one.

"Obviously, one’s not going to be happy, a bit like the (Dean) Henderson situation at Manchester United.

"But Martínez wanted to move on, he wanted to play, and I admire that.

"The fact that he wanted to go somewhere else and play is good, but with Leno, he’s a quality goalkeeper – there’s no doubt about that, he’s shown that.

"For me, his main strength is his shot-stopping."

Leno will be looking to keep out Tottenham when Arsenal make the short trip to their North London rivals on Sunday (4.30pm).
