Arsenal hero makes Arsene Wenger claim as he delivers verdict on Mikel Arteta appointment

Arsenal great Charlie Nicholas has explained why he is delighted to see Mikel Arteta join as the club's new head coach.

Arteta has signed a deal until the summer of 2023 and become the club's long-term replacement for Unai Emery, who was sacked last month.

The role will be Arteta's first of such a senior nature after spending the last three years as Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City.

Whilst many pundits have questioned this approach from the Gunners, Nicholas was quick to point to Arsene Wenger's rise at Arsenal as he looks ahead to the club's new 'project'.

Mikel Arteta on Arsenal's philosophy when he joined as a player

"Arsene Wenger came in with no reputation and look what happened to him," Nicholas told Sky Sports.

"He has spent three years with one of the best in Pep Guardiola. He is an intelligent guy. He was a leader at Everton and Arsenal.

"This is a project. I didn't want Arsenal to go down a big-name route. It's about building blocks and they have to get back to that. I am very happy that Arteta has finally been agreed."
