Arsenal Head of Medical services outlines non-negotiable term to restart Premier League season

Arsenal club doctor Gary O'Driscoll believes preventing all spitting on the pitch must be a non-negotiable if football is to return.

The Premier League is believed to be determined to finish the current season and is currently exploring the best possible ways to do so.

Although any return to club football in England is entirely dependent on government approval.

However, the latest reports have suggested that senior figures at Downing Street are behind the idea of “Project Restart”.

The Premier League is aiming to have matches playing again from June 8 with clubs returning to training from mid-May, a proposed timetable has revealed.

The timetable has been circulated among clubs and the Telegraph reports that the Premier League will speak individually about the proposal.

As part of the return to top-flight action, the government is likely to insist that sports teams have to undergo full coronavirus testing three times a week in order to return to action.

But O'Driscoll, writing on social media, also believes that players should be told that spitting isn’t allowed under any circumstances.

“For so many reasons preventing all spitting on the pitch must be a non-negotiable on return to train and return to play,” he wrote on Twitter.

O’Driscoll recently rejected a move to Liverpool in order to remain in north London.

Just before Christmas, reports emerged claiming that O’Driscoll had handed in his notice and was set to join the Anfield club.

The current Premier League leaders were believed to have made him their top target to replace the FIFA-bound Andrew Massey.

But the highly-rated O’Driscoll, who joined Arsenal in 2009, suffered a change of heart and opted to remain at the Emirates in March.
