'Arsenal have one foot in the Europa League final': Standard Sport reviews semi-final first-leg result against Valencia

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang answered the call once again for Arsenal to take a commanding lead back to Valencia in their Europa League semi-final tie.

Mouctar Diakhaby had given the visitors an early - and deserved - lead only for Lacazette to hit back twice in the first half; rolling home an Aubameyang cut-back before Valencia goalkeeper Kevin Trapp made a mess of a header.

The second half was an even affair but Lacazette was guilty of missing two good chances to complete his hat-trick. However, as the game entered injury time, Aubameyang volleyed home Sead Kolasinac's looping cross.

It was a much-improved display from the Gunners, who had gone into the game off the back of three straight defeats and nine goals conceded. The return leg at the Mestalla will prove a tough test for a team who struggle away from home.

Arsenal reached this stage of the competition last year and will be keen to go all the way and qualify for the Champions League after their challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League severely faultered.
