Arsenal have a huge opportunity against Inter Milan that Mikel Arteta must take

Three questions on the latest Arsenal team news came and a grand total of five words were offered in response.

Even by Mikel Arteta's typically coy standard this was an impressive effort at his pre-match press conference, just over 24 hours before Arsenal face Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Were Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapie and Max Dowman still unavailable after missing training earlier on Monday? "Yeah."

Would Cristhian Mosquera and Kai Havertz both be in the squad? "Yeah."

And were there any other fitness updates to share? "No, that's all," Arteta stretched himself to.

After six straight wins to start their Champions League campaign, Arsenal are effectively already through to the last 16, for all a draw is technically still needed from their last two matches to make it official.

Finishing in the top two in the league-phase standings would earn the Gunners home advantage in the second legs of knockout ties right through to the final if they made it that far.

With Arsenal holding a five-point advantage over Paris Saint-Germain in third, and knowing they will host Kairat next week, there is really no jeopardy on tonight's Inter match.

It was put to Arteta that he might therefore consider making a few changes to avoid risking any injury issues with key stars.

"Let's see after a really good night of sleep how will we decide tomorrow morning," came the predictable response.

Arteta is not often one for wholesale changes, particularly in the Champions League, but this surely must be the time for him make the most of his strong squad.

Arsenal host Manchester United on Sunday and that is by far the biggest match of the week. For all the 'next game is the most important one' soundbites, Arteta should not be going strong against Inter.

There is no need to start Bukayo Saka, who was on the bench against Nottingham Forest with a "niggle". At least one of Gabriel and William Saliba should get the night off, along with Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice.

It is not as though Arteta is short of options. Eberechi Eze has had limited minutes recently, Mikel Merino has impressed whenever he has been on the pitch, and Kai Havertz's fitness needs building up.

Last week, Arteta went near enough full strength against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and got the win. Three days later against Nottingham Forest, with only two outfield changes, a lethargic Arsenal were held to a goalless draw.

United already look a revitalised side under Michael Carrick. Four times this season, a United player has covered at least 7km out of possession in a Premier League match - three of those came against Manchester City on Saturday.

Carrick's side will arrive in north London with energy and intensity after a week off, and the Gunners must be able to match it.

Arsenal's perfect run in the Champions League has earned them the right to prioritise elsewhere. Now is the time to cash that luxury in.
