Arsenal hatch plan to sign £23million Salzburg star Dominik Szoboszlai amid Real Madrid interest

Arsenal have surmised a plan to sign Red Bull Salzburg talent Dominik Szoboszlai.

According to the Mirror, the Gunners will give themselves a shot of signing the playmaker by offering to pay his release clause of £23million in three yearly-instalments.

Szoboszlai recently emerged as a top target for Arsenal ahead of the January transfer window, mooted as an alternative to summer target Houssem Aouar, a deal the Gunners failed to get over the line.

Szoboszlai's release clause is only around half of Aouar's, but Arsenal still need to pay in instalments, according to the Mirror. The Gunners, of course, spent significantly in the summer window, splashing out £45million on Thomas Partey.

Even so, the report claims they are pretty confident they will have a chance of beating the likes of Real Madrid to the Hungarian's signature. RB Leipzig - Salzburg's sister club - and AC Milan have also been linked.

Arsenal are understood to want a playmaker having struggled to create goals so far this season, Mikel Arteta's men only managing nine goals in eight games.

Szoboszlai has impressed for Salzburg since making his move from Liefering in 2018, scoring 22 goals in 74 league appearances.

The 20-year-old, who is still under contract until 2022, has already scored five and assisted nine this season from only 13 outings across all competitions.

RB Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch recently spoke about Szoboszlai and his future, telling the Futbol with Grant Bahl podcast: "The reality is that a guy like Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to have many suitors this winter.

"He’s an incredible talent, and I say this: When you coach young players, you have to love them and love the fact that they’re going to move on and love that they’re going to have big opportunities to prove themselves and show how good they are.

"If you’re only worried about how it affects your success, then you’re not really going to ever be effective at coaching and leading young people.

"So with a guy like Dominik, I mean, I want him to show everyone in the world how good he is.

"So let’s see what happens, but I would be surprised if he winds up staying past winter. We play with teenagers, and of course when they do well a lot of clubs get really excited."
