Arsenal handed Sokratis exit blow as Napoli pull out of deal for wantaway Greek defender

Arsenal have been handed a blow in their bid to move on Sokratis Papastathopoulos, as it's reported Napoli have pulled out of a deal.

The Greek defender is keen to leave the Premier League side this summer, and his transfer would help raise funds to strengthen Mikel Arteta's squad.

A verbal agreement has been in place with Napoli for some time, but it's reported in Italy that a deal has collapsed.

RAI reports that Sokratis' agents have been informed that the Serie A side will not be making a move, as Kalidou Koulibaly is set to stay at the club.

The Senegal international is a target for Manchester City, but they've been unwilling to meet the £75million asking price.

And, according to RAI's Ciro Venerato, Napoli have now accepted that they will not get an acceptable offer from City or Paris Saint-Germain.

With just 10 days to go until the window shuts Sokratis has therefore been informed that if he wants to leave Arsenal he'll have to find another club.

The notion that Koulibaly will stay has also been backed up by the agent of another Napoli target, Jordan Veretout of Roma.

Mario Giuffredi said: "The negotiation is not there because the idea was that if they sold Koulibaly they could get him (Veretout).

"I think it's very difficult for something like that to happen.

"Today is Friday, the transfer window has a week to run. It's all too difficult."
