Arsenal handed January transfer boost as Houssem Aouar 'faces Lyon axe'

Arsenal transfer target Houssem Aouar has reportedly been axed from the Lyon squad after refusing to train.

Aouar was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer transfer window but ended up staying put.

The France international was an unused substitute in Lyon's 1-0 victory over Angers on Sunday.

According to L'Equipe, the 22-year-old decided not to warm down with his team-mates after the game.

It is reported that staff had arranged a half-hour session post-match as an alternative to training on Monday - but Aouar was not happy with the condition of the pitch.

The article adds that sporting director Juninho and director of football Vincent Ponsot, with the consent of president Jean-Michel Aulas, have decided to punish the player for his actions.

And that punishment will apparently take the form of him being left out of the Lyon squad entirely for this weekend's Ligue 1 clash at home to Reims.

Aouar has made eight league appearances so far this term, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He has also picked up one red card.

He emerged as a target for Arsenal over the summer before Aulas publicly ruled out a move.

At the time, Aouar insisted he was happy with the outcome, telling Telefoot: "I am happy, this is my city and this my club.

"I am proud to represent this club, I have so much motivation to make a great season.

"We made a choice, I'm happy to stay here. Aulas and Juninho convinced me to stay in Lyon."

According to The Mirror, Arsenal are expected to rekindle their interest in Aouar at the end of this season.
