Arsenal handed huge double injury blow before Liverpool Carabao Cup clash

Arsenal appear to have been dealt further selection headaches for their clash against Liverpool tonight.

The Gunners head to Anfield for the rearranged first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final - with a place against Chelsea in the final awaiting the eventual winners.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will welcome Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to the squad after recovering from positive Covid-19 tests.

But it appears that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is set to lose two key players.

Arteta hinted earlier this week that there is no guarantee that his side will be able to fulfil the fixture against Liverpool.

And while that now looks unlikely, according to fresh reports the Gunners will be without key duo Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard for this evening's game.

Smith Rowe missed Arsenal's defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup at the weekend due to a groin injury - and Goal state that he has not recovered in time to face Liverpool.

The report goes on to say that Odegaard, who did play at the City Ground, is now also set to miss out against Klopp's men.

While it does not seem to be the case that tonight’s match could be postponed for a second time, the Gunners are facing a selection crisis. with a number of players injured, on AFCON duty or having tested positive for coronavirus.

Asked if the Gunners could press for a postponement, Arteta said on Wednesday morning: "You can never guarantee anything because you know that this changes dramatically in 10 seconds when the doctor comes through and gives you the news.

"We have experienced that already twice this season. Our willingness is always to play.

"It’s extremely volatile and uncertain. I don’t know what the situation we’re gonna have today is, it’s different to the situation we had yesterday certainly.

"Obviously I cannot get into any detail with that but it’s what it is. In the last week or so we lost so many players for many reasons and we are trying to adapt to that and use the players that we have and make the most out of it.

"There’ve been different reasons. Some injuries, some COVID and some at AFCON."
