England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley has cooled fears over an injury to Arsenal youngster Folarin Balogun, insisting the forward has a stomach bug.

Balogun was forced off in the first half of the Young Lions’ defeat to Georgia after receiving treatment from medical staff and replaced by Leeds youngster Sam Greenwood.

The striker has only started one Premier League game for the Gunners so far this season, a 3-0 defeat at Brentford on the opening day when Mikel Arteta’s side were hard hit by injury.

Asked about Balogun’s withdrawal against Georgia on Tuesday, Carsley said: “He had stomach cramps so he was struggling in the first half with that and we took him off.

“He's not injured, he just had a bit of a stomach bug.”

Balogun fired into the side netting before being withdrawn as Carsley’s side fell to an embarrassing defeat, though the manager had made a number of changes for the friendly and was without Conor Gallagher and Emile Smith Rowe after their respective promotions to the senior side.
