Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein explains decision to reject Man Utd transfer

Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein rejected the chance to join Manchester United, the club he supported as a boy, in favour of a move to the Emirates.

The youngster was highly thought of in his native Estonia and even had Juventus tracking him.

But Arsenal won the race for his signature in May 2018, although he remains behind Bernd Leno and Emiliano Martinez in the pecking order.

And Hein admits that his decision to join the Gunners was motivated by the "higher discipline levels" as well as the punctual transport links in the capital.

"I went to every club to show myself. I was at United for three days, in other clubs for a little longer," he told the Estonian FA.

"The first impression might have been deceptive, but it seemed to me that discipline and the organisational side, as well as other details, were at a higher level at Arsenal.

"In Manchester, for example, transport was always late, which is why I was late for training.

"The reception at Arsenal was very friendly and the club left a very good impression, because, let’s be honest, there was no difference in terms of level because both Arsenal and United are among the top in the world."

Hein has made 11 appearances in the Premier League 2 this season after signing his first professional deal two years ago.

But it is former United and Fulham shot stopper Edwin Van der Sar who he looked to for inspiration growing up.

"Manchester United’s offer was a shock because it’s such a big club and I admired Edwin Van der Sar and their 2008 team, whose videos I’ve watched on YouTube," he added.

"Therefore, at first, it seemed a little bit unbelievable that I would have the opportunity to go to that club.”
