Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson deletes Twitter account after Man City nightmare

Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson has deleted his Twitter account following his error in his side's 4-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.

The Icelandic shot stopper was given a rare outing against the holders as the Gunners' poor form continued.

City progressed into the last four thanks to three second-half goals that took the game away from the hosts.

Runarsson was beaten by Gabriel Jesus after less than two minutes before Alexandre Lacazette equalised.

But it was City's second goal that saw the goalkeeper come in for criticism.

Riyad Mahrez's free-kick was straight at him but the ball slipped through his hands.

It put City back in front and they never looked back after that with Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte also scoring.

Runarsson moved to the Emirates from French side Dijon and has only made a handfull of appearances this term.

Mikel Arteta though refused to blame his back-up goalkeeper despite his howler.

"It is [a terrible moment for Runarsson] but we win and lose together," he said.

"Alex has played other games. We decided to play him tonight for lots of reasons and that’s it. The responsibility is for all of us."

Arsenal's decision to sell Emiliano Martinez has been highlighted following the goalkeeping error.

The now Aston Villa No 1 was sold in the summer due to his desire to play more first team football.

Arteta couldn't guarantee him minutes once Bernd Leno has returned.

Martinez has since returned to the Emirates with Villa and kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win.

The Arsenal boss refused to dwell on the Argentine's departure however when questioned.

He said: “There’s no point having any regrets, there were different reasons we had to do that transaction, we did it and it’s part of the past.”

“Emi had a really good few months last season, he really helped us, obviously when our keeper makes an error these things are going to come up.”
