Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale labelled ‘signing of the season’ by Jamie Carragher

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has labelled Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale as the Premier League’s signing of the season so far.

Ramsdale joined the Gunners from Sheffield United in a £30m deal this summer and has subsequently displaced Bernd Leno as the club’s first-choice ‘keeper.

The move to sign the Englishman was widely questioned at the time, with Ramsdale having suffered back-to-back relegations with the Blades and Bournemouth.

However, the 23-year-old has been a revelation between the sticks and played a crucial part in the improvement of Mikel Arteta’s side.

“I went for Ramsdale because it was almost the biggest surprise to me,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “When they brought him in I thought they were bringing him in as back up and because he was an English player for the quota.

“He hadn’t impressed me in his Premier League time at Sheffield United and Bournemouth.

“But it’s not just the saves he’s made. He’s a personality, he’s a character. Already, to go into that dressing room - yes, there’s young players in there but it’s still a huge club, going into Arsenal as a young lad, a young goalkeeper.

“He’s got a presence about him that I didn’t see that he had and he’s had a big impact on the team.”
