Arsenal failed to build on their victory at Old Trafford as they suffered a fourth Premier League defeat of the season, against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Summer signing Ollie Watkins scored twice to help Dean Smith’s side return to winning ways with a superb display at the Emirates.
Villa had a John McGinn goal chalked off for offside inside the opening minute of the game and it was a sign of things to come as they took the lead through Bukayo Saka’s own goal before the interval.
Alexandre Lacazette wasted Arsenal’s best chance, heading Kieran Tierney’s cross over the bar as Emi Martinez picked up a clean sheet in the Villa goal on his return to face his former side.
The result means Mikel Arteta’s side will head into the international break stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
