Arsenal FC player ratings vs Villarreal: Thomas Partey disappointing but Emile Smith Rowe impresses

Arsenal crashed out of the Europa League after drawing 0-0 at home with Villarreal in the second leg of their semi-final.

Simon Collings was at Emirates Stadium to run the rule over Mikel Arteta’s side...

Bernd Leno 5

Was one of the better players in the first leg, but actually had a very little to do on a quiet night in goal tonight. Had a nervy moment where he was almost got caught out with a back-pass.

Hector Bellerin 4

Not a good night for the Spaniard. Looked okay defensively, but going forward attacks were breaking down on his side.

Rob Holding 6

Was actually fairly solid and one of the better players on a poor night. Went close to scoring with a couple of headers too.

Pablo Mari 6

Like his centre-back partner Holding, Mari didn’t really do much wrong tonight. Issues with Arsenal’s performance were in attack, not defence.

Kieran Tierney 6

Given he was thrown in just minutes before kick-off, the Scot did a solid enough job. Didn’t look fully fit, but that was no surprise.

Martin Odegaard 5

Played deeper than he usually would and struggled to get into the game. Was taken off with just over 25 minutes to go for Gabriel Martinelli.

Thomas Partey 4

Really struggled in midfield again and seemed at a loss without Granit Xhaka next to him. Passing radar was off too.

Emile Smith-Rowe 7

Like Odegaard, he was asked to play a deeper role. The youngster had some nice touches and moments and was Arsenal’s best player. Never stopped running.

Bukayo Saka 5

A rare off-night for the teenager, who has been brilliant this season. Never really got into the game and created little.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 5

Hit the twice post and went close with another effort, but it just wasn’t his night. Still doesn’t look fully fit after his battle with malaria.

Nicolas Pepe 5

A few flashes of brilliance, but not at the level he has been in the Europa League this season. Swapped wings at times, however he couldn’t get into the game.

Substitutes

Gabriel Martinelli (Odegaard 66’) 6

A decent little cameo from the Brazilian, who looked bright and lively.

Alexandre Lacazette (Aubameyang 80’) N/A

Willian (Tierney 80’) N/A

Eddie Nketiah (Bellerin 89’) N/A
