Arsenal fans will not be happy with what Man United have done against Newcastle

Paul Pogba has been named on the bench for Manchester United's Boxing Day clash with Newcastle United with Arsenal set to face their former title rivals on January 1.

The Frenchman made his return in a 2-0 loss to Watford before Christmas and despite the result was one of the better players on the park.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showered the World Cup-winner with praise after the defeat, which saw Pogba make his first appearance for the club since September.

"He did really well when he came on, a big plus," said the Manchester United boss.

Arsenal: A look back at 2019

"He can play anywhere, he can play the whole midfield, he is a box-to-box midfielder. He can drop deep, get it and play them long passes. He can get higher up and combine like he did on Sunday.

"It depends on the game. That's the beauty of having Paul because he is the best all-round midfielder in the world, he can do all the roles. It's great to have him back."

Former Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov also backed Pogba ahead of his return.

"Pogba's injury and illness means it is a frustrating time at the moment for everyone, especially the player," he told Bet Fair.

"He will want to be out there playing and training with the boys and he is one of their best players.

"He is a player that can really find that final pass when the game isn't quite going too well and that's why I would like to see Pogba back on the pitch as soon as possible because it has been a while now.

"He will need to find his rhythm in the first couple of games but I'm sure he will be back to his best."

Arsenal could come up against Pogba on January 1 with United set to travel to the Emirates Stadium on New Year's Day after Premier League tests against Newcastle and Burnley.

By the time of his side's trip to north London, the Frenchman could be feeling sharp again to cause Mikel Arteta problems in his first match against Solskjaer since being head coach of the Gunners.
