Arsenal fans will love what William Saliba has said about being a Gunner and becoming captain

William Saliba says he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry and become an Arsenal legend.

The highly-rated Frenchman was snapped up for £27million by the Gunners last summer before being loaned back to previous club St Etienne, and is now gearing up for his first season in English football.

Saliba has been handed the club's iconic number four shirt ahead of the new campaign, the jersey worn by one of his Arsenal idols as a youngster.

Vieira was a key part of Arsene Wenger's all-conquering side of the late 90s and early 2000s, as too was record goalscorer Henry, and Saliba couldn't help but buy into the team's iconic swashbuckling brand of football.

Can Arsenal make top four?

"I had an Arsenal jersey when I was little with Thierry Henry [on the back], so I liked the club since then," he said. "Now I am very proud to have the Arsenal jersey.

"I don't know why [I got it]! I went in the shop, and I only wanted Arsenal. I liked Vieira and Thierry Henry because I was little and I only knew the French players and they were very good.

"I am very, very proud to have the number four, so I have to be ready to carry number four."

Of course, Vieira is not the only superstar to have pulled on the number four jersey.

Per Mertesacker and Cesc Fabregas are among Saliba's predecessors, and both went on to take the captain's armband at the Emirates.

And Saliba admits he'd like to one day walk out as an Arsenal captain too.

"I hope, I hope... I hope one day, maybe!" he continued. "I am very happy to be here, with good team-mates and with a good badge like Arsenal, so I am very excited and I think it is good to be here."
