Arsenal fans will love what Unai Emery has said about Mikel Arteta's appointment as head coach

Former Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has backed Mikel Arteta to be a success at the Emirates Stadium.

The 37-year-old has been appointed to the same role by the Gunners after returning to the club three years after his departure.

In 2016, the former Everton midfielder hung up his boots and left to work as an assistant manager to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

He has now returned to north London after having help the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss to lift two Premier League titles and complete a unique domestic treble last season.

Mikel Arteta on Arsenal's philosophy when he joined as a player

Emery was dismissed as head coach of Arsenal in November due to a poor run of form and failure to show progress over developing a cohesive and attractive style of play.

It is hoped that Arteta can succeed in improving performance levels and when it comes to making the team more competitive in the future, based on his work at City.

He also spent five years under Arsene Wenger and was captain of the club prior to his retirement, and is expected to stay true to the values set down by the Frenchman.

Emery beat his compatriot to the Arsenal job in 2018 following Wenger's decision to step down after 22 years as manager.

The ex-Sevilla boss was preferred to the retired midfielder but failed to reach the Champions League in his first season, finishing fifth in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final.

Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea prevented the Gunners from lifting the trophy in Baku despite having already secured Champions League qualification for themselves with a top four finish.

It left Emery without the results to justify his methods, and fans did not connect with the football his team produced, which also played a part in his demise.

However, despite losing his job at Arsenal, the Spaniard has given Arteta his full support and believes now is the right time for his appointment as head coach.

"He really is prepared to make that next jump," he told BBC Sport.

"He has been at Arsenal before, he's been in the Premier League and he has been working with Pep Guardiola.

"I do believe this is a good decision and I would also like it to be a good decision."
