Arsenal fans will love what Martin Keown has said about Tottenham and the north London derby

It is one of the biggest days in the calendar for Arsenal and Tottenham fans as the two rivals prepare for the first north London derby of the season this weekend.

And former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has stoked the fires ahead of the game at the Emirates Stadium by making a statement that Gunners fans will love about his memories of the fixture.

Keown was involved in plenty of north London derbies during his time at Arsenal, including keeping a clean sheet on his first experience of the fixture back in 1986, and winning on his second appearance for the Gunners against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in 1993, following his return to the club from Everton.

Arsenal recorded some memorable wins against Spurs during Keown's second spell at the club, including a 3-1 success at White Hart Lane in May 1999 as they battled for the title with Manchester United, and a 5-4 win at the home of their north London rivals in November 2004.

The Gunners also clinched the Premier League title in April 2004 when they drew 2-2 against their north London rivals at White Hart Lane.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's game, Keown has recalled his memories of playing Spurs and how much the game means to supporters, with the Arsenal legend sending a message to Unai Emery's men about the fixture.

Unai Emery: Arsenal showed 'character' against Liverpool

“We used to know it as ‘three point Lane’. At that time, it was about Tottenham trying to get points off of us to stop us from winning the league, but for us it was all about going there and getting three points," Keown said, speaking on Talksport.

“It was about the ferocity and the speed of it. It was an incredible atmosphere, but ferocious.

“You have to love these games, you don’t go into it with any fear, you have to love it.
