Arsenal fans will love what Leeds United have said about Arsene Wenger

Leeds United were involved in one of the most controversial footballing incidents for many years on Sunday.

Up against Aston Villa, needing a win to maintain their slim hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League, United scored one of the most controversial goals of the season.

With Villa player Jonathan Kodjia down injured, and Villa calling for the ball to be put out of play so he could receive treatment, Leeds played on, with Mateusz Klich going on to score.

It was the 72nd minute and the scores were previously goalless.

'Worse than Kim Kallstrom!' These Arsenal fans have their say on Denis Suarez's disastrous spell

A goal would have helped Leeds keep their slim automatic promotion hopes alive, but Villa were livid, having stopped, thinking the ball would be put out of play.

What happened there after was a melee, with Villa player Anwar El Ghazi sent off for retatliating to Leeds' Patrick Bamford, with replays showing he did absolutely nothing.

There were incredible scenes on and off the pitch as both sides clashed, with Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, who has come under intense criticism this season over the spy-gate affair, shouting at his players to let Villa walk the ball into the net.

Vila duly did so, despite Pontus Jansson unhappy they were allowed to do so and the game finished 1-1, with Leeds having to settle for a place in the Championship play-offs as a result.

It brought back memories of that fateful day in 1999 when Arsenal scored a controversial goal from a throw-in in an FA Cup clash with Sheffield United, after the ball had been put out of play so an injured player could receive treatment.

Nwankwo Kanu and Marc Overmars had played on that day, with the match eventually being replayed at the request of Arsene Wenger - a match the Gunners went on to win.

The unlikely scenario which could see Arsenal & Chelsea clash twice for a Champions League spot

And Wenger has come in for praise from Leeds themselves.

Wenger works as a pundit for BeIn Sports, and was on duty for the match yesterday.

He said: "I would like to say thank you to Marcelo Bielsa for asking his players to let the goal in, that's a remarkable gesture.

"They play to come up to the Premier League, there's something at stake, it's absolutely remarkable.

"The players should not stop, if there's no head injury, only the referee can stop the game. Aston Villa should not have stopped, Leeds took advantage, that's where Leeds were guilty.

"It's remarkable from Marcelo Bielsa."

And that got the seal of approval from Leeds, who tweeted the video saying: "Always liked Arsene Wenger."
