Arsenal fans urge Bernd Leno not to pass to centre-backs against Man Utd

Arsenal fans cheered when goalkeeper Bernd Leno played the ball long from a goal kick against Manchester United on Monday night.

The Gunners have adopted the approach of playing it out from the back in a bid to emulate the type of football Manchester City supporters enjoy.

But Arsenal haven't had the same level of success as the Citizens, as was made abundantly clear when the Gunners threw away a two-goal lead against Watford earlier in the month.

On Monday night at Old Trafford Leno started the match playing the ball out to centre-backs Sokaritis and David Luiz, but this was quickly picked up on by United.

In fact the Gunners were very nearly punished by Marcus Rashford who managed to dispossess one of the back four from a short goal kick, only to lose his balance and slip.

Fearing a repeat performance to the one against the Hornets, Leno opted to play the ball long from his next goal kick - and the reaction from the Arsenal fans was telling.

Many in the away end at Old Trafford could be heard cheering Leno's decision to kick the ball up the field and not put the team under unnecessary pressure.

Unai Emery spoke out about Arsenal playing it out from the back following the win over Watford. He explained that the Gunners will stick with it and it will soon become a part of their identitity.

He said: "Watford was maybe the worst in our build up. But we are going to try, to work, to improve, to achieve our style.

"To build up with the goalkeeper and centre back is going to be our identity but we are going to share sometimes with long balls.

"Against Frankfurt we were different and decided more times to do long ball, earn metres on the pitch and after attack the space."
