Arsenal fans spot new January transfer signing in training

Arsenal appear to have completed their first signing of the January transfer window.

Although there has yet to be official confirmation.

The Gunners have signed young defender Omar Rekik from Hertha Berlin, for a fee believed to be in the region of £540,000.

The club have not confirmed the deal as yet, but the transfer was expected to go through during the summer window, before the two clubs ran out of time to complete the deal.

Rekik's transfer is due to be concluded this month, to see the 19-year-old join up with the Gunners' U23s side for the rest of the season, but eagle-eyed supporters have already spotted the new man in training.

Photos emerged, that have since been deleted, appearing to show Rekik in the background of one of the U23s training photos released today.

A number of Arsenal fans and journalists picked up on the picture before it was deleted, with @LeaksAFC saying: "Omar Rekik in Arsenal U23 training today."

Rekik, a right sided centre back who has been playing on the left and in defensive midfield, received offers from clubs across Europe, with his brother Karim - who plays in the same position - leaving Hertha to join Spanish giants Sevilla on a five-year contract last month.

Netherlands-born Rekik, a senior Tunisian international who has previously played at youth level for the likes of Feyenoord, Manchester City, PSV and Marseille, has been assured by Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker that he will get to train regularly with the first team when he joins.

The signing follows a long list of players Arsenal have added to their U23s set-up over the past few months.

An aggressive recruitment approach spearheaded by academy chief Per Mertesacker has seen no fewer than six new additions to the set up.

Among the names to arrive are Nikolaj Moller (Malmo), Jonathan Dinzeyi (Tottenham), Tim Akinola (Huddersfield), George Lewis (Fram Larvik), Joel Ideho (Ajax U18) and Catalin Cirjan who have all been signed by Mertesacker over the past year in a bid to bolster a depleted squad.
