Arsenal fans noticed what happened when Konstantinos Mavropanos made his Nurnberg debut

It was a case of one central defender in and one out during the January transfer window at Arsenal.

Pablo Mari has arrived from Flamengo on loan for the remainder of the season, and there's an option for a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard has effectively taken the place of Konstantinos Mavropanos who has joined Nurnberg for the second half of the campaign in a bid to play regular first-team football.

His arrival in Germany was greeted with a positive response.

"Konstantinos is a robust central defender and is strong in headers," Nurnberg sporting director Rober Palikuca told the club's official website. "We had already aimed for a loan in the summer but due to the rehab after his injury, it would not have made sense six months ago.

"We would like to expressly thank FC Arsenal for the good exchange and the trust that the club has placed in us."

However, Mavropanos had a debut to forget on Thursday night as he was on the receiving end of a heavy 4-1 defeat away at Hamburg.

Furthermore, as spotted by an Arsenal fan on Twitter, the 22-year-old was at fault for one of the goals as he brought down Jeremy Dudziak in the area and thus conceded a penalty.

From which Lukas Hinterseer successfully converted to make it 2-0 after 28 minutes and the night would only get worse for Mavropanos from there.

Some Arsenal fans were not impressed with Mavropanos' Nurnberg debut.

It remains to be seen how Mavropanos fits into Mikel Arteta's plans upon returning to north London for pre-season training in July.

Much could depend on if Mari signs on a permanent basis and the Spaniard has outlined what his compatriot will bring to the Gunners' defence.

"For me it's very important [Mari being left footed]. He balances what I want to do from the backline," Arteta said in his pre-Burnley press conference.

"He gives us more options, more solutions and opens up the pitch more.

"He is a player we have been following for a couple of months that we are very happy to have."
