Arsenal fans noticed what Ainsley Maitland-Niles did during the 2-1 loss against Everton

Arsenal have been criticised as a whole for their 2-1 loss against Everton on Saturday which has left them just four points above the Premier League relegation zone.

In truth, there weren't too many standout performers for the Gunners at Goodison Park with Willian, Dani Ceballos, and Mohamed Elneny all disappointing in particular.

Pressure continues to grow on first-team manager Mikel Arteta as his side have picked up 14 points from 14 league games - marking their worst-ever start to a campaign.

But there has been a special mention for Ainsley Maitland-Niles who started successive games in the Premier League and got the nod at right-back over Hector Bellerin.

It may have been a surprise to many that there was no immediate recall for the Spain international after serving his one-match suspension in the 1-1 draw with Southampton.

And Maitland-Niles might have given Arteta a selection headache ahead of next week's games against Manchester City as well as Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and Premier League respectively.

Not only did the 23-year-old win the penalty from which Nicolas Pepe converted to make it 1-1, his defensive display also caught the eye.

Tasked with keeping Richarlison quiet, the pair had an interesting battle down the Gunners' right-hand side and many are of the opinion that the England international won the battle.

Such was Maitland-Niles' impressive display that some Arsenal fans are suggesting that he should now be first-choice for Arteta.

Take a look at what's been said on Twitter...

@Gravitygunner14 said: "Ainsley Maitland-Niles should never be benched again!!"

@AFCXP19 said: "Ainsley Maitland-Niles is quite possibly the most under appreciated player at our club. Gives 100% everytime he's on the field. My one criticism of Arteta is that he doesn't play Ains enough, world class baller."

@TheArsenalog said: "I have been one of Hector Bellerin's firm supporters this season and I still am. Though you have to give it to Maitland-Niles he showed something which Bellerin used to show earlier in his Arsenal career, drive. It was just so refreshing to see. Rn, he starts over Hector for me."
