Arsenal fans notice what happened in training for Chelsea as Mikel Arteta makes big decision

Mikel Arteta will get a huge welcome as he walks out at the Emirates for his first home match as head coach on Sunday.

The Spaniard started his reign with a draw at Bournemouth on Boxing Day - Arsenal's ninth draw in the Premier League this season.

He will have some big decisions to make in terms of his team selection, although some decisions will be made for him.

The new boss looks set to be without seven first team players for the visit of the Blues, with Sokratis, Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney all ruled out, with four more doubtful for the London derby.

But one decision Arteta looks set to make could have a lasting effect.

Granit Xhaka has been tipped to leave north London next month when the January transfer window opens, with Hertha Berlin and the Bundesliga likely to be his destination.

The Swiss international fell out of favour with the fans at the Emirates after cupping his ear to them and ripping off his shirt when substituted against Crystal Palace in October.

He was stripped of the captaincy by then boss Unai Emery and while he has come back into the starting lineup of late, even picked by Arteta for his first game in charge on Boxing Day, an exit looks inevitable.

And some supporters believe the transfer decision has already been made.

Popular Arsenal fan Twitter account @ZRAFC noticed something about the final training session before the Chelsea clash that could mean Xhaka's transfer is near.

The fan account tweeted: "No Xhaka, Martinelli, Bellerin or Holding during this evening's training session."

And that has got supporters talking on Reddit about his impending departure.

User jentso said: "Good. This season is likely a wash anyway. Make them pay extra for the january transfer. We need someone better than xhaka there if we're going to compete for trophies."

Beatlesandwine went on to say: "Fully expect a loan or permanent signing in January. Everyone forgets our net spend this summer was minimal given the outgoing wages/transfer fees."

User reciprocal_space said: "If someone could get through that hot head of his and tell him to stay until the summer, he could probably get a better club, and we could get a higher fee. He was good against Bournemouth and Arteta's instructions really made use of his ability in just that one game."

Rudygha had a message for the board, saying: "Please sign someone this January, don’t be naive board."

And user DankBrownboiV2 summed up how many Arsenal fans will have been feeling by saying: "Thank god he's gone, need to bring in someone like Rabiot/Rakitic on loan now. Can't believe some fans are emotionally attached to Xhaka of all players, so sad."
