Arsenal fans loved what William Saliba did during Saint-Etienne's clash against Montpellier

William Saliba started for Saint-Etienne in their Ligue 1 defeat to Montpellier on Sunday afternoon, but Arsenal supporters were impressed by the defender's performance.

Les Verts were beaten 1-0 at Stade de la Mosson, but Saliba's display should provide some encouragement ahead of the centre-back's return to Arsenal at the end of the season.

Last summer, the Gunners beat north London rivals Tottenham to secure a £27million deal for Saliba, before loaning the 18-year-old back to Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season.

The highly-rated defender only recently returned to fitness after suffering a fractured metatarsal in November, but remains a key part of Saint-Etienne's battle against relegation.

With Saliba expected to feature heavily in Mikel Arteta's future plans, some Arsenal fans took to social media to praise his performance on Sunday.

Former Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has also given Saliba his backing to be a success at the Emirates.

The right-back, who spent four years at Arsenal, is now a team-mate of Saliba's at St Etienne.

And he has been impressed by the teenager, who he has backed to be a star.

"He's a great player," the 34-year-old told  the Ligue 1 podcast."I'm so happy for him to play next season for a big club like Arsenal.

"He improves every game and I think he is a great player. He's strong with good technique. He's quick.

"I think he has a lot of quality to play at Arsenal."
