Arsenal fans issue Edu demand as Marc Overmars makes Ajax decision

Marc Overmars is a popular figure at the Emirates.

The Dutchman spent three fine seasons in north London from 1997 to 2000, scoring 25 times in 100 appearances and was part of the Double-winning team of 1998.

Overmars has made a name for himself in his home country since his playing days ended, spending the last eight years as technical director at Ajax.

But his time in the Netherlands looks to be coming to a close with reports emanating that he has decided to leave the Dutch champions next June.

Mikel Arteta: It's impossible to have 31 happy players

According to Oriol Domenech, Overmars has "decided to leave the club in June" because "he thinks he's already finished his cycle with Ajax".

Domenech continued that there is no agreement with any other club, however, Arsenal and Barcelona, as two of Overmars' previous teams, will also be linked, given the turmoil at both clubs.

Arsenal have a sporting director in place already in Edu, another former player, but they are actively looking to replace director of football operations Huss Fahmy, who left at the end of October.

According to reports from the Arsenal Fans' Forum on Tuesday night, CEO Vinai Venkatesham said: "We have simplified the structure. The technical team – Per M, Mikel, and Edu. Raul [Sanllehi] won’t be replaced – Huss will be."

Overmars could fill that role, although there is another position that Arsenal supporters believe he could fill - replacing Edu as sporting director.

football.london exclusively revealed in 2019 that Overmars wanted the job, but instead the Gunners opted for Edu.

With Overmars set to step down from his role at Ajax in June, it will be interesting to see where the Gunenrs are and if they entertain him for a role at the club.
