Arsenal fans have William Saliba concern as Edu and Mikel Arteta make £40m transfer decision

Arsenal fans have been sharing a concern they have over William Saliba's future at the club amid the latest transfer rumours around Ben White.

The Athletic are reporting that White has emerged as a serious target for Mikel Arteta and Edu this summer following a superb season for Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 23-year-old is expected to cost in the region of £40-50million, the report claims, with the centre-back still having three years remaining on his current deal at the Amex Stadium.

Arsenal have William Saliba, who signed for the north London club back in the summer of 2019 from Saint-Etienne, but he then returned to the French club on loan for the season.

The 20-year-old defender then spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Nice, where he once again impressed and some Gunners fans were excited about Saliba joining up with Arteta and the squad ahead of next season.

However, with the latest White transfer links, there have been some fresh doubts over the youngster's future at the Emirates Stadium.

Last month, Arteta outlined Saliba's future with the club after two successive loan spells in France.

"You will see in the summer, the possible replacement," said Arteta.

"William is our player for sure and that's the decision we're going to be taking soon.

"When we finish the season we will sit down and discuss the roles of every member in our squad and how they can fulfil that role.

"He is our player so he'll be back here for sure. After that, we will make a decision based on an agreement of the role each player is going to have in our squad."

Arteta also said he regrets how he treated Saliba earlier in the 2020/21 season, with the Arsenal boss sending him to play with the Under-23s after another loan move to Saint-Etienne fell through late on.

"We had eight central defenders which is unheard of, but we didn't find the right moment or the right club or the right agreement to do that," the Gunners manager said.

"In my opinion we could have used those four or five months in a better way. We tried to maximise that when we tried to keep him here until December. Now he's had a run of games that he needed after the difficult year that he had the previous season.

"We still have great people doing that. Ben Knapper [Loans Manager] is always in contact with him, he's the one creating every assessment. As coaching staff we are obviously following his progression, watching his games and in contact with him."
