Arsenal fans have brilliant Gabriel Magalhaes shirt number theory as Gunners plot next transfer

Arsenal completed their fourth major signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week, landing Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes on a long-term deal.

The Brazilian, who was also attracting interest from the likes of Everton and Napoli, follows Cedric Soares, Pablo Mari and Willian in sealing a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer, joining the club for a fee understood to be in the region of £25million.

Gabriel will significantly strengthen head coach Mikel Arteta's defensive options, with the Spaniard having been keen to add a centre-back to his ranks all summer.

Now that a deal for the Brazilian has been concluded, Arteta is keen to add to other areas of his squad, most importantly the centre of midfield.

Arsenal's next move after Gabriel

football.london understands that the club are on the verge of re-signing Real Madrid star Dani Ceballos on a season-long for the second season in succession, but speculation continues to surround the likes of Atletico Madrid ace Thomas Partey, Philippe Coutinho of Barcelona and Lyon's Houssem Aouar.

Whether Arsenal will look to add another central-midfielder to their ranks after getting a deal over the line for Ceballos remains to be seen, but they are continuing to be heavily linked with all three names on that list.

Atletico Madrid midfield enforcer Partey has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for most of this year, with the Ghana international considered as the ideal candidate to add some much-needed steel and grit to the Gunners' midfield.

And following Gabriel's switch to the Emirates Stadium earlier this week, one Arsenal fan has come up with the theory that the Londoners are still confident that they could land Partey before next month's transfer deadline.

That is because Gabriel, who admitted that conversations with Arteta played a key role in his decision to make the switch to the Emirates Stadium, has been handed the No.6 shirt in North London.

Nowadays, a vast majority of centre-backs tend to take up shirt numbers four and five, opposed to six.

But with Sokratis currently occupying shirt No.5 at the Emirates Stadium, Gabriel was forced into taking No.6 under his wing.

But with the Greek defender's future in North London currently in doubt, No.5 could become available if he was to leave the club before next month's transfer deadline.

And that has led to one key thing being picked up on by one eagle-eyed Arsenal fan. Partey, at Atletico Madrid, of course, wears No.5, meaning he could still land his favoured shirt number if he made the switch to North London should Sokratis leave.

Whether Arsenal have purposelessly done that, of course, remains to be seen, but Partey could claim No.5 if Sokratis leaves the club.

Earlier this week, it was claimed by Goal that Partey is still 'keen' on securing a move to the Emirates Stadium, providing, of course, that an agreement can be reached between Arsenal and Atletico.

The midfielder has a release clause in his contract of around £45million, but the Gunners hope to be able to land him for less.
