Willian is a much-maligned figure at Arsenal.
The Brazilian signed for the Gunners on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer transfer window, penning a lucrative three-year deal at the Emirates despite being 32 years old.
The winger enjoyed a great debut, laying on two goals in the 3-0 victory at Fulham on the opening day of the season, but since then he has failed to impress.
He has had just two shots on target in the entirety of the season and often bears the brunt of Arsenal fans' ire on social media.
Manager Mikel Arteta has overseen an impressive upturn in form in recent weeks with five wins in their last six games to move into ninth place in the table.
The most recent victory came over Southampton, just days after losing to the same opponents in the FA Cup.
And while Willian only appeared 19 minutes from time in that clash, it was still long enough to get supporters' backs up.
Nicolas Pepe starred, scoring one and being a constant menace to the Saints back-line. And with the match entering the last 15 minutes - Willian having been on the pitch a matter of minutes - Pepe showed superb footwork to nutmeg one Saints players and take on a further three to get Arsenal moving up the pitch.
Willian was to his left, but rather than making a run into space down the left flank, the Brazilian stayed level with Pepe, offering no outlet, and the Ivorian was eventually tackled and possession lost.
Some supporters have sympathised with Willian suggesting it was late in the game and that he need not have made the run. Others, however, were not so kind.
If he had made the run there was no danger of being offside, with the Southampton defence deep.
And it may have encouraged Pepe to get his head up and play the ball forward, or have encouraged a Saints defender to go with the run of the Arsenal winger.
Arsenal won the game 3-1 and it did not matter, but it was another example of Willian failing to win over the fans.
