Arsenal fans can't believe what happened to Wojciech Szczesny amid talk of summer transfer

Wojciech Szczesny had an afternoon to forget as Poland lost their opening game at Euro 2020 against Slovakia.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper was given the nod ahead of Lukasz Fabianski, but that decision backfired in the first-half with the Juventus star going into the history books for all the wrong reasons.

As Slovakia took the lead after 18 minutes through Robert Mak, Szczesny was ultimately left ruing a particular decision.

Mak brilliantly created space for himself by beating two Poland defenders down the left-hand side and fired a shot at goal, only to see his effort smash off the near post.

However much to the delight of Mak and Slovakia, seconds later the ball was in the back of the net.

This happened after the ball bounced back off Szczesny and into the back of the net, but Mak was not credited with the goal despite him doing 99% of the work.

Instead, the former Gunners no.1 was credited with an own goal.

And in doing so he has become the first goalkeeper to ever be responsible for an own goal in the history of the European Championships and to make matters worse Poland slumped to a 2-1 loss.

This nightmare for Szczesny comes hot on the heels of him being linked with a return to the Emirates Stadium during the summer transfer window.

But after witnessing what has happened to their former player, some Arsenal fans have taken to social media to warn Mikel Arteta and Edu against making a move.

@GunnerGlasgow said: "Szczesny beaten at his near post? You can take the man out of Arsenal..."

@ArsenalFanOffi1 said: "And people think Szczesny is an upgrade on Leno?"

@livlan said: "Anyone talking about having Szczesny back at Arsenal. Forget it."
