Arsenal fans bemused by what Gareth Southgate did to Bukayo Saka during Hungary vs England

Arsenal starlet Bukayo Saka has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence in the last 12 months.

Saka was handed his first-team debut in November 2018 by former Gunners boss Unai Emery, impressing during a Europa League victory against Qarabag.

He then impressed current manager Mikel Arteta before establishing himself as one of the first names on the Spaniard's teamsheet, registering eight goals and ten assists across all competitions last season, earning the club's player of the year award in the process.

England's Gareth Southgate was quick to notice the 20-year-old's stellar performances and he was then named in Southgate's squad for Euro 2020.

The Hale End graduate again showcased his talent during the tournament, picking up UEFA's star of the match against the Czech Republic before setting up the equaliser against Denmark in the semi-finals.

Saka then missed the decisive spot-kick as the Three Lions lost on penalties against Italy in July's final but the youngster has since bounced back from the disappointment, delivering an impressive display as Arsenal defeated local rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in last month's north London derby.

The skilful winger netted a goal and provided an assist for teammate Emile Smith Rowe before plying his trade for England during the ongoing international break, staring against Andorra on Saturday before he came off the bench against Hungary on Tuesday night.

However, the versatile winger was deployed in an unfamiliar position against the Hungarians, coming off the bench to play as a right-wing-back in the dying embers of the game, a decision that left Arsenal fans bemused on social media.

Here is how a select few reacted.

@LegacyGooner93 : "Flicks England game on to see if Saka has come on. See's Saka playing right back. Flicks game off again."

@AFCTalhaV2 : "Has this guy brought Saka on to play him RB?????"

@ZakHowells : "Southgate really doesn't know what to do with the talent at his disposal. Going to a back 5 when the game is 1-1 and playing Saka at wing back is such a waste."

@davidinho_21 : "What made Southgate think Saka rwb and Foden rw was a good idea."

@igorsteps_ : "England need a goal so Southgate has switched to a back 3 with Saka at RWB."

AFC_Carys : "Southgate will pay for playing Saka RWB against Hungary."
