It has taken a while, but it finally feels like Gabriel Martinelli has arrived in this Arsenal team under Mikel Arteta.
The Brazilian youngster started the first two Premier League games of the season, but had found opportunities few and far between up until being given a chance as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Newcastle United last month.
An opportunity he grabbed with both hands.
Within seconds of replacing Bukayo Saka, the 20-year-old was celebrating his first goal of the season and his performance was enough to earn him a start against Manchester United a few days later where he claimed an assist and put in a respectable performance despite the 3-2 reverse.
As a result, Arteta has kept faith in Martinelli by naming the Brazilian in the Arsenal starting XI in each of the last four games.
And the forward has responded with three goals and an assist to get the Gunners back on track following defeats at Old Trafford and Everton.
Two of the goals came in Saturday's 4-1 win over Leeds United and Arteta was full of praise for Martinelli.
"He’s come a long, long way because his energy, his passion, his commitment, it doesn’t get much better than that ever, but there are other aspects in the game that he’s had to develop and maintain the ones that he’s exceptional at, like today, because when he has chances he puts them away," the Spaniard said.
"Again, he’s in the right direction."
With Martinelli on the right direction towards becoming one of Arteta's undroppables, some Arsenal fans think it is soon time for a change of shirt number.
Of course, the Brazilian will continue to wear no.35 for the rest of the season, but no.11, no.17 and even no.14 - currently worn by former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - are the popular choices if he does make the change ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
